Film show: Django Unchained
Date: Tuesday, 5 March; Friday, 8 March
Time: 5 March at 7pm; 8 March 4pm
Venue: Red Shift Coffee Lounge
This film continues Quentin Tarantino’s trend of imagining a counterfactual history in which the victims rise and take out their oppressors. After Inglourious Basterds, a story of  Nazis being put to the sword by Jewish commandos, we now have “Django Unchained” showing a freed slave, played by Jamie Foxx, wreaking vengeance on a cruel, heartless but charismatic plantation lord, a role in which Leonardo di Caprio, of all people, surprisingly excels!
As in all Tarantino’s movies the driver is the powerful dialogue, which works in perfect rhythm with the flurries of almost choreographed violence at every turn. So for those who have long been missing this genre here is a modern “Western” featuring cowboys on horseback meting out elemental justice with all guns blazing in the approved fashion — makes one remembers fondly the movies of one’s younger days like Shane!

Katy Perry — Part of Me @ Redshift
Date: Sunday, 10 March
Time: 7pm
Venue: Red Shift Coffee Lounge
After all the gloom they have been screening, here is something unabashedly fun! This is a documentary about the charismatic young singer Katy Perry on one of her tours. The makers follow the arrangement details of the build-up for various concerts, interspersed with biographical asides and personal glimpses. And clearly there is ample footage of the actual stage performances.
This all turns out to be quite riveting, with one of the main reasons for this being Katy Perry herself, who really does seem to have star-power in that every time she is on screen one can’t stop watching her every move. It helps too that not only is she charming but seems to be fairly mature, unlike many other young divas and starlets who let early success go to their heads.
